Persimmons and Peanuts

This is a special time of year when the farmers market has peanuts and persimmons. The peanuts I get at the farmers market and take home and cook in my rice cooker are the only ones I eat. My body does not tolerate any other type of peanut or peanut product. But when they are boiled they are excellent and very gentle on the digestive system. Its best to add salt to the water and one piece of star anise for flavoring.

When you get fresh peanuts at the farmers market be sure not to let them sit out for too long. Because they are fresh and damp they can go moldy. If you do not boil them right away its best to keep the in the refrigerator and check on them to make sure they’re not going moldly.

One of the greatest things about this time of year in addition to the amazing weather is the persimmons. I strongly prefer the sweet, soft Hachiya variety over the more popular Fuyu variety. I go to the stands which sell Hachiyas and ask the vendors if they have any soft ones. They sometimes have some soft ones that have gotten squished and/or have partially ruptured skins. That’s perfectly fine. I buy them and suck the sweet jelly out of them which is one of the most amazing, glorious treats of nature.

I used to live not far from a Hachiya persimmon tree years ago and it was so delightful every year when it produced its fruit and I would manage to pick some of its fruit. Luckily it was growing next to a fence that I could climb up on. The people in the house appeared to not eat the fruit and not harvest it and no one every said anything to me so…

I miss not living near a persimmon tree – as I do all the other fruit trees that used to be around where I lived – loquat, plum, apricot, various types of apples, various types of oranges, lemons, and some fruits which I didn’t even know the names of.

Its a very wholesome and relaxing activity to go for a walk each day and pick fruit. I miss it.

I do not believe the lies about why we need commercial agriculture. We don’t. We need green communities with living plants and abundant fruits and vegetables growing around us.

Commercial agriculture and all the bad things it brings is going in the wrong direction.
