What is agni? In my last post I might not have been entirely clear about what exactly agni is.
Agni is the fire within. If a person goes without eating they will feel the agni strongly. That is the easiest way to feel it.
We can view agni as an essential nutrient, just as essential as any other nutrients. In fact it is the most essential nutrient. We should never forget about agni in our diets, in our plans and activities related to nourishing. Agni should always be a part of it.
Even before we feed our bodies in the morning we should already be aware of our agni. When we are eating, we should continue to be mindful of our agni as we eat. Our goal should be to keep the agni within us clear and strong.
We are conditioned to kind of be afraid of not eating. We are conditioned to react to it as deprivation. But we can turn it around and try to make agni our friend. Agni is a powerful, healing energy within us and the purpose is not deprivation. It is a fire within in us which gives us power.
Becoming agnitarian is taking our entire approach to nourishment one step further. We need to become agnitarians because as we evolve we have to transcend the mindset of indulgence. Perhaps at one stage in our evolution we saw healthy indulgence as a positive thing as we moved from less-conscious stages of nourishment.
Of course we need to be healthy and we need to eat. And of course we should eat well. But we should also learn to love the agni fire within and start to feel that it is the main source of nourishment in our lives.
When that happens we will naturally be happy eating more simply. We will be happy to take only what we really need, and delight when we are able to feel nourished and satisfied through simplicity.
Thus, there is a focus on whole foods. On simple, highly nourishing things which we learn to prepare with our own hands. We make a bowl of amaranth, rice, or millet and learn to delight in it as thought it is truly ambrosia from heaven.
If we do this we are capable of transforming the world.
Agnitarianism is a transcendence into a state of freedom beyond cycles of attachment and guilt. One can nourish oneself and experience bliss and be free from attachment and guilt. By honoring the agni within one makes a continual offering of oneself.
For those who have gone through the experience of evolution of their nourishment, they understand how monumental the shifts are from, say, a beginning stage to becoming vegetarian. Then, after that, there are other stages. Perhaps one becomes vegan. After that, there are still stages. One does not define oneself simply by what one doesn’t eat, but what one does eat. One strives to eat healthy, pure, and wholesome things.
But then there is one level beyond this. The jump to the stage of agnitarianism is I believe highly significant, although externally it might not seem like much. It is the natural progression of stages of consciousness, of refinement which leads to a highly pure state.
Agnitarians are perhaps rare in this world. But they are certainly capable of deeply healing the world because they have mastered the art of transformation within themselves. They are still part of the world. They still partake of it. But they are also mostly free of its attachments. Thus they have transcended in a major way cycles of suffering. Agnitarians are making the ultimate dedication of themselves to universal light and love.
