Concealers are one thing I seem to always be testing out. There are so many available, and there’s a lot of variety in terms of things like viscosity, coverage, ability to correct, etc.
After having tried so many including pretty much all of the leading ones, there’s one concealer which to me stands out the most: MAC Select Moisturecover.
This concealer is to me the perfect consistency. Its not too viscious (pasty). Concealers that are too viscious can be difficult to smoothly blend over the skin because they tend to cake. Some concealers are designed this way probably because a pasty formulation can provide very good coverage. If you had to do a photo shoot or someothing where you really want hard core coverage than such a concealer would be a good idea.
But for everyday wear I find such pasty concealers too much. I also don’t want to have on that thick pasty substance under my eyes all day.
On the other side are concealers which are too fluid, too runny. The obvious issue with such concealers is insufficient coverage. When applying runny concealers I find myself applying multiple coats. Perhaps that’s the way they are designed to be: so that one “builds up” the coverage with multiple layers. But its too much to have to do this all the time as part of a makeup routine.
The most perfect forumlation I’ve found so far is MAC’s Select Moisturecover. It comes with a wand and you can just dab some on the lower inner corners of the eyes at the base of the nose, then using your ring fingers spreading it along the lower part of the eyes outward.
Applying concealer this way – with the fingers – is my favorite way to apply it. For some reason it seems like brushes are never really able to spread it smoothly. I’ve tried many different types of brushes and even with the best ones I always feel uncomfortable doing the application, as though the concealer is not really spreading the way I want.
With fingers though its the opposite. Its easy to spread out the concealer exactly right. There’s a visceral aspect of applying concealer with fingers this way which cannot be duplicated with any other method. The actual feeling of the concealer beneath the fingertips provides feedback so that you can adjust the amount of pressure of the fingers to the exact right amount.
And in terms of actual concealers MAC’s Select Moisturecover is to me the most perfect formulation in terms of viscosity to work perfectly with this method. It blends in perfectly with the skin. There is no caking nor buildup. And the coverage is excellent. Most other major brands carry a concealer similar to this one, but I’ve found that Select Moisturecover has the best texture and definitely the best coverage.
