At the natural foods store today I was looking at some new things. A while ago I remember having this upscale granola I wanted to try and it had these interesting dried berries in it. I don’t believe in granola and never had that one again but it made me curious about various uncommon dried fruits one sometimes encounters.
Today I noticed some packages of different berries which I’ve never seen before so I decided to get one and try them. They are “Golden Berries” and OMG are they absolutely amazing. They are closely related to the tomatillo and originate in South America but spread to other countries as early as the 18th century. They are grown in South Africa and known as Cape Gooseberry.
With many dried fruits there’s a certain limit to how many one can eat before becoming saturated by them. The sugar in dried fruit is concentrated and one can get overwhelmed by the sugar dose. Then there is the fiber and when one eats too many dried fruits one can experience the prune effect. I sometimes notice the prune effect when eating dates although its not as intense as with prunes and related fruits.
These Golden Berries pack a mean punch and are amazingly delicious. They have a tartness which is sublime and I’m sure are loaded with lots of intense nutrients which heal everything and make you live forever 🙂
