We hear about peak oil and are concerned with the ensuing problems facing the human race which it presents. We hear about peak-other-things where other-things can be other material resources including fresh water, or food. Upon hearing about such things we become concerned. We also may think that such problems shouldn’t be happeneing, that the very fact that they are happening to begin with is indicative of things having gone wrong.
But its heartbreaking and sickening in a way that, among all this attention given to peak-things, the most important of them all – our Earth – is missed.
Just as resources may have or have had their peaks, our planet – our Mother, Gaia – also has had her peak. We just passed it. It is truly heartbreaking. And we humans today are that which has caused this immensely heartbreaking, and truly sickening and despicable thing.
This is not the same kind of peak that is experienced in the life of an organism, as it progresses from infancy through adulthood into old age. That is just a natural process. This is about the peak of life. Life in this world, this great, vast, ancient world with all its legacy, grandeur, and mystery, has passed its peak. Earth will never have a peak as it has just had, before humans fucked it up, at least for hundreds of millions of years.
Humans are just beginning to comprehend that the eco-systems they have laid waste to are very ancient, precious things which took tens- and hundreds-of-millions of years to evolve to this lush, rich, complex and vibrant state, which now is being destroyed. Precious species which evolved over tens of millions of years are wiped out in the blink of an eye. And things are getting much worse.
I wonder why no one is concerned about Peak Gaia or Peak Earth. What a truly arrogant, sick, disgusting species humans are.
