Hotel room alchemy: Facial cleanser

Tonight at the hotel room when it was time to get cleaned up I realized that while I had remembered to bring eye makeup remover and cotton rounds, I actually forgot to bring facial cleanser.

Rather than just cleanse one’s face with bar soap here is what I came up with:

For the base, use conditioner just like facial cleanser. Apply to face and disperse. Then, for a little extra uumph, you can use a little bit of bar soap mixed with it.

Q: What’s your favorite travel herb?

A: My favorite travel herb by far is lemon verbena. It is the most nurturing, calming, and overall healing herb that I can think of.

Q: In what form do you use it? How do you prepare it?

A: Just the dried leaves which I buy bulk at a natural foods store. I just put them in water, leave steep for 5 – 10 minutes, then strain and drink. I always travel with a little strainer for herbs.

Q: Do you sweeten it with anything?

A: Lemon verbena is so awesome that it actually doesn’t need sweetening, but usually I will sweeten it. If I’m at home I will use stevia leaf in the infusion mixture. On the road I usually take one of those little stevia powder packets. One little packet is enough to last for several days. Another sweetener could be honey especially if you’re nursing throat or respiratory inflammation.

Q: So you really like lemon verbena then?

A: Yes. I absolutely love it. I cannot travel without it.

Q: Any other essential travel foods or herbs you recommend?

A: Yes: atlantic dulse flakes. I’ve gotten to where I put them on salad, vegetables, or in rice or other grain dishes almost all the time. They are even excellent on popcorn.
