Chia Seed, Basil Seed, and Omega-3

I think I posted about this a while ago. While chia seed is very popular for its fiber and high level of omega-3, I was curious about basil seed, which is a similar seed from the same botanical family. Basil seed is also known variously as sabja, sabsa, selasih and tukmaria in India1 There is also a very popular Indian beverage called falooda which contains basil seed. It is based on an older Persian recipe which was brought to India during the time of Persianate dynastic rule.

There is basically almost no scientific info available regarding the nutritional content of basil seed but I did find one post[truthnhealth.com] online which states that chia seed contains less than 200 mg of omega-3 per oz. versus 4 g (4,000 mg) per ounce of chia seed.  However there is no source mentioned for this so I would highly question its veracity.

Basil seed is also reputed to have similar fiber benefits as chia. I did try basil seed this morning in my oatmeal-flax porridge instead of chia. Its a nice flavor.

Too bad there isn’t more info available about basil seed though. Wish I had my own nutritional analysis lab!
