Advice if you are getting electrolysis treatment

This advice has been acquired through experience.

1. Before treatment cleanse skin thoroughly with a gentle cleanser such as Nutribiotic Sensitive Skin cleanser which I highly recommend.

2. Do not apply anything to the skin prior to treatment. This means no lotions, serums, oils or:

3. Numbing cream – do not use. Areas like the upper lip are painful but numbing cream does not help reduce pain and can actually make it a lot worse. Just deal with the pain. It can help to squeeze something like a piece of cloth. Also opening the eyes can reduce pain which probably has to do with the fact that when the eyes are open the brain has to deal with processing a lot more sensory input.

You may find a breathing style that helps with dealing with pain. I find that shallow, slow, controlled breaths from the diaphragm help.

4. After electrolysis treatment cleanse the skin immediately with warm/hot water and more Nutribiotic Sensitive Skin cleanser. I stress immediately, like right after you leave the treatment room. Bring the cleanser with you. Gently apply a washcloth with warm/hot water to rinse and compress the skin. Do not rub but just compress and/or pat. Warm to hot water is not a problem but the water should not be really hot. Again, do not apply any products to the skin. No oils, serums, witch hazel, anything.

5. It may be advised to not shave immediately after treatment, however I find that it’s ok if done very gently and only with a non-electric, high-quality razor. Obviously it is easy to cut swollen skin. I use a normal shaving cream and multi-edge razor. I actually like the vibrating models which have a battery in them because they are more gentle. If you use numbing cream, which I discourage, DO NOT shave for several hours because you can seriously injure your skin. Do not use an electric razor which can seriously cut the swollen, sensitive skin. After shaving clean the skin again with more Nutribiotic cleanser.

6. Get some air. Go for a walk outside but try to avoid too much prolonged, direct Sun. A little bit of Sun is ok. Do not touch the skin and try not to touch it for the rest of the day.

My experience is that, following these steps, skin will heal extremely quickly from treatment – on the order of tens of minutes.

Not following these steps results in skin that can be irritated for hours and even days.

Following these steps I find that it is not necessary to do anything else. No icing is necessary. For the rest of the day I do not apply anything to the skin. Just let it calm down.

It’s also important to get good rest after treatment so that the skin can go through its natural rejuvenation cycle.
