It’s almost shocking how many calories are in grains. One cup of uncooked brown rice grain is around 680 calories. If you are vegan and rely upon grains for a significant portion of your daily calorie intake that is good, but it’s easy to eat a lot of calories of grains.
Therefore it’s a good idea to measure the amount of grain you cook by using either a measuring cup or, as I prefer, a Japanese 1-gō masu. A one gō masu is 180ml or 0.76 cup which comes out to 520 calories of uncooked brown rice grain. I find that a masu is easier to fill and there’s something more wholesome to using it over a typical plastic measuring cup.
You may think that 580 calories’ worth of grain is a lot, but if you’re vegan and grains are one of your primary sources of nourishment, it isn’t.
It turns out that one-half gō is exactly the right amount of uncooked oats to cook for that late-evening, before-bed bowl of oatmeal. Add a data, a few walnut pieces, a touch of cardamon, some soy or other milk, and you’re good to go!
I find that on a calorie restriction diet the late-evening bowl of oatmeal helps me sleep.
I’ll have to write another post about my easy-to-follow no-refined-carbs moderate calorie restriction diet.
